CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Lalli Hotakainen
CANON: Stand Still Stay Silent
CANON REFERENCE: A wholeass wiki about the canon, it's pretty up to date. And this is Lalli's page specifically.
CANON POINT: Adventure 2, chapter 11, page 345
CRAU HISTORY: Lalli was only in the game for a few months, but in that time he had some pretty big developments. The most recognizable one being his bond with 'Kissa', the bakeneko who he was paired up with upon entry to Slumscape. In canon, anything hopping into your body is Very Very Bad and, at best, is a sign that you're about to die a painful death. Lalli spent his first few weeks on edge waiting for a whole host of horrible things to happen to him, only for them not to happen at all. It took time, but Lalli has come to accept that 'Kissa' isn't going to kill him, and he's actually stuck with her for the rest of his life (or until a way to separate them is found).
The second big development is that he became significantly more self-sufficient. Normally he would struggle with the day-to-day things like cleaning up after himself or making sure he had enough food to eat, but he had to do that for himself in order to survive in Slumscape. Necessity breeds progress, and Lalli has indeed become better at taking care of himself.
Finally, Lalli has become slightly less antisocial. But only slightly. He gained a few favored people who he decided were 'okay', and one he even accepted as a friend! Though he still has a lot of growing left to do on that front, he at least has started talking to people. (The friend he made in Slumscape was Izo btw, and I know the player is apping him here too.)
Also, I don't see anywhere else to explain it, so I'll put it here: 'Kissa' isn't the bakeneko's actual name. She's just skittish about giving out her real name so Lalli calls her 'Kissa' as a nickname. It just means 'cat'.
AGE: 20
APPEARANCE: The one on the left. He also has a mask (number 47) that he keeps on his person at all times. Usually under his cloak and against his shoulder or the side of his head, but sometimes he actually wears it as a mask too. He also has marks on his forehead that match the ones on the mask (though they're difficult to see most of the time, they do glow when he uses magic), and his eyes have slitted pupils like a cat's eyes.
CONTRACT PAYMENT: "For everyone to go back to where they should be." Meaning Tuuri and his grandmother pass on to Tuonela (the Finnish afterlife), and Onni is alive and well and not in the Silent World anymore.
I don't know if 'Kissa' gets a wish too but if she does all she wants is to stay alive.
QUESTIONNAIRE:
As a note, these are all answered OOCly. If Lalli answered them ICly, they would get one-word responses.
1. What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?
Family to Lalli is his blood relatives. His parents, his aunt and uncle, his cousins, his grandma. It also means both "obligation" and "unconditional love" at the same time, like two sides to the same coin. On the one hand, it's tiring to keep up with family needs. Tuuri pushes him to be social too much, and he has to go along with it because she's his cousin and family stays by family. Onni pushes him to do his work perfectly and make no mistakes, which is tiring but he does it because Onni is his family and he can't let his family down. Lalli dislikes being touched, but he always tolerated his mother's pet names and cheek-kisses. He dislikes social gatherings, but any time his grandmother said 'you're coming along too' he went. But all of those obligations came with unconditional love and support, which means so much to someone like Lalli who has trouble forming meaningful bonds with anyone. It goes both ways too: Lalli gets grumpy about family obligations, but he loves his family unconditionally and would do anything for them. (And Lalli is kind of A Lot for Tuuri and Onni to deal with, but they also love him unconditionally so they put up with all the nonsense he puts them through because that's what family does.)
2. How do you react to betrayal? How severe must a betrayal be for you to consider it such?
Lalli isn't quick to trust people, but that trust can eventually be earned with enough time and effort. Because of this, a true betrayal could only come from someone who has put in the time and effort to earn his trust. Otherwise Lalli would just say "pff, I saw that coming from a mile away" and not be bothered by it. But Lalli's trust is a wholesale thing: if he trusts you, then he trusts everything you do. Even if it looks like you're betraying him, he'll still trust that you're doing something to help and will go along with it in the hopes that it will make sense later. Lalli's perception of the world can be off at times (because of, as the author has said, "past traumas and neuro issues") which is why he takes his time giving his trust out to people. So for someone to break that trust and betray him, it would absolutely shatter him. It would be a deep cut, and he wouldn't know how to process that pain. It's likely he would run and hide for a while afterwards. And he would probably ghost the person entirely after that, given how he dislikes feeling those kinds of strong, painful feelings.
3. Your Faction leader, not just your boss but the leader, has asked you to carry out a hit. The target is a non-affiliated public leader, well-liked by the people of the city. Do you carry it out? Why or why not?
Lalli has a lot of trouble with communication and frequently misunderstands what people tell him, so odds are if the faction leader uses double-talk to ask for the hit Lalli wouldn't understand what he meant and would follow the literal word of what the faction leader said. Example: 'Take him to the cleaners' Lalli would interpret this as 'he's dirty and needs to be cleaned', so he would take that leader out to a spa day (on the faction's dime) while blatantly saying "Faction Leader thinks you smell bad but can't say that because of politeness, so they asked me to help you smell less bad" to the public leader. Odds are the public leader would come out of it with a better opinion of Faction leader, thanks to Lalli's misunderstandings. So he would carry out the 'hit' as he understood it, because while the request would seem odd to him he's also former-military and knows not to question what leaders say to do. (If the hit was said very blatantly in a way Lalli couldn't misinterpret, he would vapor-lock and phone a friend for help. He kills Trolls and guides the souls of the dead, he doesn't make people dead.)
4. An oni of the Shuten Clan has gone completely berserk, and is going on a violent rampage through the city. You can't stop him, but you CAN lead him elsewhere, but you only have two choices: a road by a discotheque with a large crowd in front, or the nearby park that you do not know is unoccupied, and may have children present. What do you choose, and why?
Lalli puts a lot of trust into his skills. He started his mage-training at 6 and has been an active member of the Finnish military since 12. He uses his skills daily in his world to fight Trolls and stay alive. While he is still quite young, he feels confident in his abilities, in a "I'm bad at a lot of things but I'm really good at this one specific thing, so I'll do this one specific thing for the rest of my life" kind of way. Lalli might suck at communication or empathy, but he's an amazingly talented scout who can maneuver in a death-world silently and without leaving a trail. So he would lead the oni to the park, knowing that the park would be less-occupied and that children are small enough for him to pick up and carry. If any kids happen to be in the park, his magic that lets him sense the presence of others would tell him exactly where those kids are and he would know which direction in the park to lead the oni to keep it away from the kids. And if he couldn't avoid the kids, he would use his magic to outspeed the oni, collect the kids, and then dump them somewhere safe for the time being before going back to the oni. Then he would keep the oni contained to a relatively small area by using his magic and speed to effectively run the oni in circles until help arrived. (Also this isn't to say that he would necessarily succeed at that plan, just that he feels confident enough in his skills as a scout and mage and that is why he would choose the park.)
POWERS & ABILITIES: an explanation of mages in Lalli's canon. The sections on Finnish mages are the important ones here, as he is a Finnish mage (and thus has no access to the magic that Icelandic mages do).
Finnish magic comes from two sources: their inner self, and the gods. The magic that comes from within is usually protection magic: sensing the presence of other life forms, hearing the cries of trolls (which sound like wordless screeching to non-mages), putting up both physical and mental barriers to protect themselves from outside attacks, and other small things here and there. A lot of what a mage can do in regards to 'magic from within' depends on what their luonto is though. Lalli's luonto is a lynx, and he can enhance his running speed and climbing capabilities and be particularly loud when he needs to be. He can also sense the presence of both Trolls and living people, and he's pretty good at keeping up barriers. Being the grandson of one of Finland's first post-illness mages, Lalli has both strong blood running through his veins and a lot of special training (first from his grandma, then from his cousin) that makes him particularly adept at being a mage.
The second source of magic is accessed through prayers to the Finnish gods. Pray to the god of weather to bring about a clear night, pray to the god of the hunt to track down non-infected animals to eat, pray to the god of traveling to avoid Trolls during a trip. The gods don't always listen, but usually they do, provided that you know the right words and can say the right prayers to invoke their presence. Lalli has a lot of these prayers memorized, so he can easily recall the prayers to invoke the gods.
The final source of magic Lalli has is actually 'Kissa's magic. As a bakeneko, she had a few magical tricks up her sleeves: she is immune to poison, can summon fireballs and start small fires, and can reanimate the dead. Lalli also has this magic too, though because of his canon he steadfastly refuses to reanimate any corpses.
As for how they would be impacted in the game, I think Lalli might not have access to the second bit of magic (praying to the Finnish gods to get them to do things for him). Since he's in hell (and in another world entirely technically), he would be cut off from the Finnish gods right? And for the first and third bits of magic, that can work on a sliding scale of 'weak' to 'strong' pretty easily.
SUITABILITY: Point the first: Lalli was in Slumscape before this and there were lots of the same kinds of content there. While he's not completely used to it, it's still something he can tolerate.
Point the second: Lalli is from a canon about a world that is 90 years post-zombie-apocalype. Violence, gore, horror, and death are an everyday thing for him. Doubly-so since he is a mage, as mages are one of the first lines of defense against the Trolls that roam his world.
FACTION SUITABILITY:
Shuten: Lalli dislikes loud places, so he would be out of sorts with the Shuten clan. It could work, but he would complain the whole way through. That said, with his excellent tracking and scout skills (as well as how easily he disappears into a crowd), he would be great at tailing targets who may have been cheating and reporting back on any funny business he sees. So it's a "he dislikes it at the start but finds the work rewarding because he's actually good at it" if he's put into the right kind of niche work here.
Tamamo: Lalli would haaaate working here. He's very sensitive to both strong smells and a lot of foods, so working in a restaurant would be no good. He's also not too keen on sex (it takes a LOT of trust to get to the point where he would consider it), so the pleasure district is also terrible for him. Also, bad with communication in general, I could see him upsetting patrons on accident. If he was put in a job where he didn't have to deal with certain key aspects associated with 'food' and 'pleasure', then he might be okay.
Sutoku: He might do okay here, because a lot of financial work is busywork and while it's mind-numbing he could push through and do it. He might actually do well as a utility-worker or something, he's naturally gifted at climbing up tall things so he could easily go up to check on transformer boxes or something.
Enma: Look. I know you said "don't assign your character a faction", but 'Shinigami' is basically his job in his canon. He uses prayers to guide the souls of the dead to the afterlife. He performs funeral rites. He kills Trolls (the zombies of his canon) and releases their souls to the afterlife. His magic even forces him to listen to the screams of the damned so he knows where to go to find those who need guiding. The youkai in his head even has a connection to the dead. He's just really good when it comes to 'death stuff' and while he specializes in Finnish 'death stuff' he could also pick up the skills needed to thrive in this city too. This is probably the best faction for him.
